|
 | HOW WE GOT OUR NAME There
was a large Indian camp on the Platte River near the present site of Casper, Wyoming, that
was known to the early trappers as the Old Sioux Camp. To the north, near the present site
of Bridger, Montana, on the Clark's Fork River, was another large and well-known Indian
camp. These places were cross roads of the nation and trails led in all directions.
Halfway between was Ten Sleeps. The Indians measured distance by the number of
"sleeps". It was "ten sleeps" from here to each of the main winter
camps. Indians camped on the banks of the Ten Sleep Creek and first settlers arrived on
the Nowood River 100 plus years ago.
|
 | Some of Ten Sleep's richest history took
place in the early decades of the 20th century, but Ten Sleep didn't officially become
incorporated until 1933.
|
 | A few of the more historic buildings in
town are the Mountain Man Cafe, which had a dance hall upstairs. Two rooming houses, the
Brown Hotel and the Mills Hotel, serve as private homes today. The building that is home
to Dirty Sally's began as a bank, and once housed a doctor's office.
|
 | Agriculture, especially ranching,
some logging, bentonite mining, hunting and tourism form the core of Ten Sleep's economy.
|
 | There is an excellent town park,
equipped with grills, a cooking shelter, picnic facilities, with clean rest rooms, a dog
run, and lots of shady areas to stop and rest awhile.
|
 | The school, K-12, educates around
135 students with adult classes for further educational opportunities.
|
 | The town has several churches,
including the Assembly of God, Baptist, Catholic, Church of Latter Day Saints, Methodist,
and Seventh Day Adventists. Organizations in Ten Sleep include the Lions, Lioness,
Eastern Star, Masons, V.F.W. and Auxiliary, and Girl and Boy Scouts.
